For those of you who have been following the site for a while you’ll see that I’ve updated to what I think is a much more readable format. I did this for a few reasons.
The first is to simply the site. The old one had lots of fancy graphics and widgets, but I found that was just increasing loading time.
Second, for whatever reason, the comments plugin for the old site just didn’t work properly. The subscribe check box overlapped the comment box and no matter what I did I couldn’t fix it. In addition, the comments weren’t threaded properly – it’s wasn’t immediately clear what comments were in response to what other comments.
Third, the old site was designed to showcase the pictures associated with each blog entry. That would be fine if this was a food or photography blog where pictures are a key (perhaps THE key) asset. But for me, I like to flatter myself by assuming that my actual writing is why people read my blog.
The new format solves all of those problems. On a computer or tablet you’ll see a grid layout that allows you to see the most recent 4-6 articles at the same time. On phones you’ll still see a single stream of articles. On all devices the pages should load lightning fast. And, perhaps most importantly, the comments section is properly threaded and you can subscribe to a comment thread if you want.
Let me know what you think of the new look.
Looks much better. Easier to read.
Great – thanks for the feedback.
Agree with Greg, makes it easier to roll though and find the article I wanted to re-read.
Fantastic. That was one of my major goals for the redesign.
